However, it’s the green leafy sort that appear to be particularly beneficial. In one 2010 study, researchers from Leicester University concluded that ~100 grams a day could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 14 per cent.
Leafy greens have also been associated with protection against various cancers thanks to the anti-tumour activity of the antioxidants that give their characteristic colour. These antioxidants also appear to help us recover from exercise, and may even boost immunity by stimulating the cells lining the gut.
Thing is, most of us don’t eat enough greens. So why not add them to a smoothie?
Skeptical? Just try it. Not only is it genuinely delicious, you also get the feeling you’re getting a daily dose of something rather good. And so you are.
Start with a handful of spinach and work up. I like the blend below, but you can simply add to your regular smoothie recipe and blend as normal.
Spinach banana smoothie
- 300ml soy, almond or regular milk
- Half a banana
- One scoop vanilla whey
- 1-2 handfuls fresh spinach
- Slug of water
